My 1974 BMW 2002

From shell to road, the rebuilding of a classic automobile my way.

In the late 60's BMW introduced a small boxy car that changed them as a company and the way many people drive. It put BMW on the map in America and gave birth to the sport sedan. While the 2002 hasn't been produced in over 30 years it is in the essence of every BMW.

I am currently on my 4th 02. My first is the one pictured in the upper left. It was a 75. Rust got to it. The next 2 were technically my brothers cars, but I used them for part for my current one. In May of 2002 I started on this project, now 6 years later it is nearing road worthiness again. It's amazing what one part failure can do to the project. But thanks to the faulty slave cylinder, I now have a 5 speed. Once everything is hooked up it will be ready to go cruising. Now I just have to keep it on the road.

If you are new to 02s make sure you register your 02, www.bmw2002registry.com

NOTICE: The 2002 registry is in the process of being updated, some parts of it may not work. Sometime soon we will have a new, better site to gather this information. Keith and Nick are currently working on it.

Be sure to check out BMW2002FAQ.com for more info that you could ever want about the 02. Become part of the community.

And finally, a new site to let you know about upcoming 02 events. http://www.2002events.com/

The verona 02 in the upper left corner of the site was my first 02. It was a 1975 that I had a lot of fun in. I had a trust in it that most people don't even put in their spouse. Yes it failed me at times, but it was a great car and we shared some exciting times. When I finally had to let it go because of rust I was quite sad. But of course I knew at the time it would not be my last 02, after all I did have 2 others at the time. Many of its parts and the other 02s now live in my current 02.

It finally happened. I took the day off on Friday since I had worked most of the day last Saturday on a project at the hospital. It took a few hours and I was able to finish all the remaining items pertaining to the 5 speed conversion. But I ran out of time to try to start it. So I hooked up the battery charger to let the battery trickle charge. On Saturday most of the morning was booked with stuff, as was the afternoon and early evening. So at about 7 I got the stuff out of the way from behind the 02 and got it off the ramps. Then rolled it out into the driveway. The battery was still not charged enough so I hooked it back up and preceded to clean the garage, at least start on it. Every so often I would try to start it and each time it was getting closer. Which was probably a good thing so it could move some oil through out the engine before it started.

Finally after a little while it fired up. I let it idle for about 5 minutes before revving it to hear it pur and then roar.

02 running for first time in almost 2 years

Since I cleaned out my side of the garage I decided to document some of the parts...

I was able to get the shifter and linkage hooked up and the speedo cable. The driveshaft is connected to the differential, but because of the tight spaces by the guibo it is not connected there yet. I have to take off the one that is on there for 2 reasons. One is to get the bolts through to connect the driveshaft and two because the guibo is rubbing on the shifter linkage and it doesn't look very good. I have another that I will try that looks better. I also found while under the car that the rear sway bar bushings are really bad. Just a little more to go and I can drive it.

It has been a while since I really got to do anything with the 02. Over the past year I have been in the process of replacing the 4 speed with a 320 5 speed. It is quite a job figuring it all out, but I am proud to report that it is almost complete now. The transmission is attached to the engine and the starter is in place. The slave cylinder might be upside down, not sure yet. Today hopefully I will be able to hook up the speedo and the rear transmission mount and the shift linkage. Tomorrow I plan on getting the drive shaft hooked up. Pictures to come.
