My 1974 BMW 2002

From shell to road, the rebuilding of a classic automobile my way.

April 2004

Now that it is cleaner, I had to get another engine shot. Notice the temp switch by the relays.

From the passenger side, the paint on the exhaust manifold flaked off unfortunately.

Gas tank bolt down and complete.

Filler installed.

Other side on the filler, I put a screw in the evaporator hose hole.

Rolled it outside to fire it up and work out bugs.

Headlights seem to be really bright.

See.

This area had a bit of a problem.

Found more bondo to remove on the driver side door.

This is the metal filler I used. It recommends using a thinner that make to make it easier to work with, it can be tricky.

Filled all the trim holes. I like the non-trim look on the later models.

More holes filled on the trunk.

All those areas where it is bare metal had bondo, a lot of bondo.

Closer shot of the rear quarter panel.

And another.

You can see a few areas there were I used some metal filler and ground it down. Looks like metal doesn't it.

This is before grinding it down and smoothing.

More shots of the metal filler before sanding.

And more, passenger rear quarter panel.

Driver side rear quarter panel.

And more.

More driver side shots.

Driver's side door.

Driver side door.

This is after sanding the metal filler and spraying with primer to keep it from rusting.

Outside again to check for more bugs and tuning.

This area is probably the worst on the car and will require a bit of time to get it right.

Finally the hood is on, my wife(Stacy) helped me hold it in place long enough to get it bolted up.

Finally got the hood bar in place. Make sure the spring is in there right. If you look at it before you install it, it will make sense. Also helps to have the heater box loosened a bit to fit it in there.

Here it is ready for the filler to go on. This filler is to smooth it out and get it ready for painting.

There is no mistaking where you put this stuff on. Smells bad, so don't do it in an enclosed space. I had about 10 minutes to get the stuff on and spread out in the areas before it started to get hard to work with. After an hour it was ready to sand, it says on the can it should be ready in 20 minutes.

Driver side door filler.

And another on the driver side door.

And the big area on the car, it is quite smooth now that it is sanded down.

Sanded down and sprayed primer on the scratches, there were a few.

Front shot.

Side view.

This side doesn't have the filler on most of it yet as it set up to quick (not a bad thing though). The tires are still the old ones in this picture. The wheels are stock wheel sprayed rustoleum white. It is temporary.

Rear shot. Ran out of time to do much else this month since the last week of April was spent in Denver for training. I did see some nice 02s and met some more of the community.
