Pertronix Ignition Upgrade |
The basics:There are a few different upgrades for your ignition. Selecting one depends on what the car will be used for and how the rest of the engine is set up. On my 74, which only upgrade so far was the Weber 32/36, I went with the Pertronix Igniter. Two other common ones are the Crane Cams XR700 and XR3000. I believe they are known as Fireball now. Since I went with the Pertronix, that is what I will go over really quick. The installation is pretty straight forward. You just need to make sure when ordering that you let them know if your distributor is "forward" or "backward". Go to JustBMWs and find the Pertronix and it will explain. |
The install:If you have about an hour you could install it that quickly after you get it. Follow the directions in your manual on how to get the old stuff out and then you can start putting the Pertronix in. There are three trouble spots that some people run into. The first is a small solder spot that appears to be in the way in one of the brackets. Just work with it a little and you should be able to get it positioned good. Second is the rubber piece that you have to put through a hole. Needle nose pliers and a small screwdriver help here. The third thing is the magnet piece that goes over the shaft. The top of it needs to be flush with the top of the sensor. It has some areas that need to line up and some people have had problems with it. You still use the same rotor and cap, but you may want to replace them if you haven't in a while.

The extras:Many people also add the MSD6a ignition box to supply more power to the plugs. I haven't done this yet, but most likely will.
