My 1974 BMW 2002

From shell to road, the rebuilding of a classic automobile my way.

October 2003 to January 2004

This actually covers October through January. Not a lot got done until January mainly because there just wasn't a lot of time. But it is amazing what you can do if just given time.

Quick shot of the way I ran the rear brake lines, hope this holds ok. I may have to weld in a clip or something to keep it from bouncing.

The new center bearing. I will be tackling this once the floor boards are done.

Had an oil leak from the bottom bolt, took it out, cleaned it up and put it back in there really good. Hope it doesn't leak.

Regular normal looking exhaust manifold.

Shiney! That's 1500 degree engine paint.

Cleaned and painted chrome. I also have red LED bulbs I'm going to try as the turn signals.

January.

Various shots of the floor board rust holes.

Cleaned them up and cut the metal back to were it was good.

As you can see, it was kind of bad.

Too hold the metal in place on this one I used a telescopic magnet tool I got for Christmas.

Closer to being finished with this one.

Inside shot of the previous area.

Other side of the passenger side floor board. Decided welding from inside the car would be easier.

And just about done with this one, but ran out of gas for the welder.

Pretty much finished with this one, have to touch up the underside.

Had to do this one in segments, should make it stronger too.

Close up. Still some clean up has to be done.

Almost done.

Done, this only took me about an hour and a half. Still have some touch ups to do, but it isn't bad.

You can really tell a difference right now, but this one has the LED bulb in it.

This one is a normal bulb.

Done with this part too.

Tried cleaning up the mounting spot. Kind of made a mess of it.

Passenger side outer mount spot. Decided after the inner mount clean up attempt maybe I can make it work with less clean up.

New mount in place. This mount came from my 74tii shell.

Had to be careful with this side, gas lines run right below this mount.

See! Also wanted to show I made sure this was going to stay in place.

And I have a seat, although I can't find all my bolts and I have to make some adjustments to the outer mount since they are from an roundie, courtesy of Barry A.

The previous owner was going to put some sort of seats in here, I have no idea what, but I had to remove the front set of mount points to install the right ones.

Inner PO mount.

Metal cutters and about 5 minutes.

During welding I kept noticing smoke coming from under the car. I finally figured out that it was doing this because of where I was welding and where the ground clamp was. It must have been causing a reaction in the undercoating, causing the smoke.

Inner mount done.

Outer mount done.

Removed the drive shaft to replace the center bearing. Took only a few minutes since the rear bolt have been out since I brought it to the house.

In order to remove the center bearing I have to remove this bolt, supposebly a 24mm wrench will do the job.

And the reason I have to replace the center bearing.
