My 1974 BMW 2002

From shell to road, the rebuilding of a classic automobile my way.

November 2002

So what is all this. Wiring and the removal of the steering column. Some of this is to help me put it back together, but also to show what a mess it is. The heater box is almost ready to come out, just need to undo the heater controls from the dash. Oh, the first two pictures show my silver 74's passenger side floor.

Here is the removal of the heater box. To remove the control levers you just pop the plate off the front and unscrew the brackets. Disconnect the hoses and remove the box. OK, there is more to it but it is covered at 2002FAQ.com. Also removed the clock and put it in the new car. Also shown are the steering column and instrument cluster.

Finally got the parts I ordered. Now I just need to go get the metal brakes lines and finish pulling the stuff off the parts car.

Finally, the wiring harness is removed from the engine bay and most of the cabin one is disconnected. The new tranny mount is in (first pic), the drive shaft is straightened, the brake assembly is removed from the old car and there is an odd switch for something on the bottom of the steering column cover. The other pictures show the wiring harness and what a mess it is.

This covers about a 10 hours over 3 days of working on the car. I got the pedal box in (what a pain), bolted in the steering column (that was tricky), put in the engine bay wiring harness, painted the brake booster and sprayed undercoating stuff around the gas tank area to keep it from rusting. I also included a shot of the engine and the stock alternator and it's brackets.

Well, the fuel lines are hooked up with the electric fuel pump and the regulator. I still need to get the power to the pump though. And I will as soon as I pull the wiring harness to the trunk. The rest of the wiring harness in almost all hooked up. I need to clean instrument panel still.
